The Artists District

Charoenkrung (AKA the Old Town) is becoming the new hotspot for weekend brunchsters. Thanks to the many new graffiti street art painted by both international and local artists, which dotted around the neighbourhood. It’s no secret that Charoenkrung is becoming the hipster hotspot for artists, musicians and backpackers alike. The area is full of young and vibrant energy, which is reflected in many establishments around here, and 80/20 is a great example.

Street Graffiti and Instagrammers

80/20 cafe is co-located in the same building as the hip hostel run by the same name. On one side of this building, there is a huge graffiti of a bird riding on a uni-cycle. So don’t be surprised if you find many people with selfie stick hanging around in this little alley. On the opposite side of the road there is another nice graffiti of the street cats. And if you’re lucky you might find them posing in front of their own images like we did 🙂

Nostalgic yet Modern

Now on to the decor. It’s very modern and eclectic, yet the place is filled with many nostalgic Thai inspired items. For example, the pattern bricks used for counter materials are very typical of what you will find in many suburban homes. As well as the tap in the bathroom and the original stone floor which are in keeping with the style of this neighbourhood. Some elements remind me a bit of my grandma’s house in the countryside, the nostalgic effects with the modern accent really works here.

Seasonal Local Ingredients

What about the food, does it live up to its funky decor? The chef’s menu is certainly very creative. It’s definitely not the usual plain traditional brunch menu they are offering here. The emphasis is very much on using the Thai local and seasonal ingredients. We’ve ordered poached egg with housemade lardon (essentially a risotto made from barley) and this comes with a seasonal edible herbs and flowers. Unfortunately week that we went the edible flowers were not in season. Never the less the dish was well seasoned and beautifully presented. We love that they have many options of fresh cold pressed juice and smoothies here.

The Verdict

Overall we had a lovely brunch with fresh local ingredients in a relaxing and nostagic atmosphere. We’d love to come back here again to try their edible flowers menu when they are in season.
